The movements to String Quartet IV carry the following meanings: The opening - Moving-Still - makes me think of Dawn in a magical forest. The next movement - Running - is just that - perhaps Bartok out of breath! The 3rd movement has, I hope, a sort of Brahmsian breadth to its melodies, while the 4th movement should be obvious: it is my take on Mendelssohn's Mid-Summer Night's Dream.

The last movement (From Darkness, Light) moves from the throbbing darkness, to which the Mendelssohn quote has unaccountably led, back to the opening light of Dawn.

String Quartet IV will appear on the forthcoming Innova recording of my most recent music, Innova CD 777. It will be performed by the Left Bank Quartet, to whom String Quartet IV is affectionately dedicated.
