About New Paths

New Paths dates from 2008 and was commissioned by the Barlow Foundation for the Left Bank Concert Society, who premiered the piece at Kennedy Center on March 28, 2009.

The 1st movement's title, Changing Times refers both to hopeful American politics in 2008 (when it was written) and its musical meaning: changing rhythms and meters.

Voices (2nd movement) refers to the individual melodic lines in each instrument, particularly in their lyrical, singing quality.

Dancing (3rd movement) is for people (and performers!) who can negotiate the fast Bulgarian rhythms (3 + 3 + 2). The dancers get a bit of a rest in the Trio (slower 5/4) but it heats up again with the return of the opening fast dance.

In Darkness, Light (last movement) opens with a mysterious, dark sound. This gives way to something sunnier at the end, which is in fact a brief recap of the opening bright sounds in a new context - a tempo twice as fast.
