About B.P., A Melodrama

B.P., A Melodrama is what I call a "theater piece": a concert piece in which staging plays a role. In this regard, B.P. tells the story of the familiar Greek myth in which Baucis and Philemon (the B. P. of the title) are visited by the gods Zeus and Mercury. The music symbolizes by turns the fearsome aspect of the gods (opening fiery trombone and piano parts) as well as the homey simplicity of the elderly couple (shades of Gounod's Faust as performed on an ancient 78 rpm disc). It is a "fun" piece with clowning as well as instruental virtuosity.
