The Woods here are those of Mallarme's faun in Debussy's Afternoon of a Faun, And Debussy and the faun make an appearance towards the end of the piece. But at the beginning there is no hint of this; the dark green (to me) of Debussy's masterpiece begins to appear about midway - hence this piece is a journey Into the magical Woods of Debussy's youth. (The piece has often been performed with a dancer, which heightens this experience.)
The sounds on the tape are all digital modifications of samples provided by my colleague at the University of Maryland, Professor William Montgomery, who premiered the piece. The sounds of Debussy towards the end were provided by my Kurzweil synthesizer.
