About Hommage

"Hommage" came about as a result of a request by my good friends (and former students at Mills College) Barbara Rowan and Constance Sablinsky. They wanted a work to help celebrate the centenerary of famed composer Darius Milhaud's birth.

The first movement quotes from Milhaud's most enduring work, the delightful Creation of the World. In the 2nd movement ("Forest Murmers") one can hear frog ribbets and bird peeps which I think would have pleased Milhaud's ever-young spirit. (He was my colleague and mentor during my first stint of teaching, at Mills College.
