Flutepaths received its world premiere in New York City on March 6, 2006, performed by Leslie Kubica. Subsequently Alejandro Escuer of the Onix Ensemble performed it at the University of Maryland. It will appear on the forthcoming CD of my more recent music (Innova CD 777) performed by Sarah MacIver.
The tape part for Flutepaths is derived entirely from a few samples of flute playing, digitally modified through the computer program "Protools". These electronically modified samples were conceived as an ideal performer - one who leads the flutist down a path of increasingly frenzied improvisation (at least it sounds that way; actually, the notes are all written down).
In composing Flutepaths I started with the tape part, letting it lead me where it wished - it was an enchanted path for the flute , beginning in a luminous D Major and proceeding through lip slaps, amplified key clicks, swirls of sound - eventually to end up where it began - in something like D Major.
